a potentially dangerous way to celebrate the holiday. on this fourth of july the fireworks have been going on for hours in oakland. and across the bay area. police and fire departments are having a tough time keeping up with the hundreds of illegal fireworks going off tonight all over the bay area. while some are enjoying the show other residents say they are fed up. a lot of coverage tonight. deborah is in the lb's old neighborhood of san jose. the last time we came to you and hour ago there were so many fireworks going off. it looks like it is quieter now.>> reporter: it has calmed down in the last hour. this neighborhood seems to be t sidewalks out here tonight. fir streets for the last couple hours. closer to downtown san jose there is more concern. especially about fire.

not even atm the fireworks were shooting skyward on the streets in alviso. 8 pm. san jose has tried to curb this in recent years with outreach enforcement. but neighborhoods across the city are being rattled. residents of organized demanding police take fireworks seriously. the good old boy network is fun. it is a bunch of guys having a good time. this is what we have always done. why should we do anything about it? opal this critic complains she and other residents are told they must document violations. they expect us to go with s fireworks. when the police are afraid to intervene. they want everyday citizens to take a > someone lights a firecracker and runs.>> reporter: this councilman setting up fireworks

in the hills. organizing a show tonight over the lake he said is an alternative that makes a difference. illegal fireworks have subsided substantially. little carrot and stick. everyone wants to enjoy the fourth of july. everyone likes fireworks. let's go see the free fireworks displays around the city.>> reporter: on my reports tallied more than 100 incidents in recent weeks. the resident who recorded these say he cannot attend a second's a sanctioned show. he is afraid to leave. we are prisoners of our own house. because of everything going on around us. i want to make sure the house doesn't burn down.>> reporter: engines are placed in hotspots. on this their busiest and riskiest night of the year. the weather is starting to heat up. the hills are getting dry. just a small little spark can cause a catastrophic wildfire. like the likes we the fine here is $500 for a first

fireworks violation. clearly that is not much of a deterrent. much of the city including here at the north end of san jose in alviso. we have not seen police here during the past few hours of as we have watched this ramp-up. they did see a fire engine rolled in. there was a small grass fire set by a spark from a firework. the crew put it out quickly. and then moved on. fireworks are exploding everywhere. the skies above oakland. this was the scene outside the studios. about two hours ago. we should point out that all fireworks in oakland are illegal. oakland is not among the bay area cities were safe and sane fireworks are so. the fire department tells us there are no reports of major problems. tides of these illegal fireworks. san

are lower to the ground are really nice. you can see the different colors. the last one was a triangle was really cool. in general they are doing as best they can. i was hoping for better weather. it is neat that people are roughing the coldness. >> reporter: many say they came to san francisco to celebrate the fourth because this holiday means love of country freedom and gratitude. a time for reflection. it is america's birthday. i'm an american. i think it is need to have good pride for your own country. and celebrate it. it is people. it is openness and acceptance. community. >> reporter: the circle family and friends includes a fifth grade teacher who is also a father of five young children. this holiday a teachable moment.>> we go back to the founding of our country. the liberties we have and how our founding fathers fought for us to be able to live and act

and scattered thunderstorms. that had threatened the event. the president praised the men and women who he called america's heroes. >> america's fearless resolve has inspired heroes who defined our national character. it is willed our warriors up mountains and across minefields. it has liberated consonants split the atom and brought tyrants and empires to their knees. critics said trump inserted himself into a typical nonpolitical holiday event. they also claimed the president use of taxpayer funded celebration of military power to bolster his own political campaign for reelection. they are assessing the damage in southern california where a six point for a magnitude earthquake struck earlier today. the largest the region has seen in 20 years. the epicenter was near the city of ridgecrest. in rural kern county. 100 miles north of los angeles. the u.s. geological survey said

the quake ened along to -known fault was not one of them. the shaking could be felt as far away as las vegas long beach and parts of the south bay. governor newsom has declared a state of emergency in kern county to ensure those affected by the quake at the aid and resources they need.>> reporter: surveillance footage from this restaurant and ridgecrest shows the force of the quake as the building shook items fell off the shelves. and employees ran for cover. the quake shook bottles off the shelves in this liquor store wiping out most inventory. and causing thousands of dollars in damage. it also left a huge crack in this road in the small town of chama. and ridgecrest a town of just 29,000 people residents braced for the worst. janet and jerry are now dealing with a huge mess inside their house. lasted

about 30 seconds and knocked them off their feet. cannot get off the floor. i wasn't sure i could stay on my hands and knees. was never ending. i tried to get out the couch. and i couldn't. he was starting for the door. it knocked him down. it was just unbelievable.>> reporter: two house fires were reported and ridgecrest after the earthquake. although it wasn't clear exactly what sparked the flames. and ridgecrest regional hospital patients were evacuated as a precaution. ultimately about 20 patients were transferred to other facilities so engineers could inspect broken pipes at the hospital. the shaking also cut power to several local businesses. i started feeling swaying. i felt like i was getting dizzy or something. i realize all the boxes were swaying as well. all of a sudden all of the lights turned off.>> reporter: the shaking was less severe 100

miles south in los angeles. where one person took this footage of the swimming pool wither sloshi seismologist say we have been in a quiet period in terms of earthquakes in california.>> this type of earthquake is much more normal. on the long run we expect earthquakes of this size. is not even 6 1/2. the long-term average is once every five or 10 years in southern california.>> reporter: it was just a bit weaker than the northridge quake in 1994. which residents third 6.6. and killed dozens of people and cost billions of dollars in damage. the difference is that quake was centered in the populated area. while this quake was centered in a remote area far from any major city. today's earthquake is a good reminder to make sure you are prepared on the next earthquake hits. include canned food water medicine a first aid kit and anything else you might need

we have breaking news in the north bay. deputies have shot a man and bodega bay. the sheriff department said deputies responded to reports a man was assaulting people near swan and hearing drive just after 8 pm tonight. they found several victims needing urgent medical

the suspect apparently stole a car and was located on pelican loop. authorities say the suspect attacked deputies and a deputy shot him. the suspect in several victims were taken to the hospital by ambulance and helicopter. there is no word yet on the extent of their injuries. san jose brushfire this afternoon spread to a detached garage communications hill. the fire burned 35 acres off of mcintyre drive. there was concerned the fire might spread to additional structures. firefighters were able to contain it to just the one garage. investigators are still looking into what caused the fire. arson investigators say fire the rep through a neighborhood under construction in manteca is suspiciousfire de fire officials say the call came in at about 5:30 am and fire crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to a fifth home that was also under construction. one battle fourth street. one man who said he lives nearby that he was thankful for

the quick response from fire crews. all this new construction. my house over here and all of our houses but that is the first thing i'm picking up. what if it starts bouncing around pics >> it did not extend down the block. you can see the fifth home was charred but not damage. investigators say the utilities were not connected to any of the homes. just two weeks ago to model homes a few blocks away burned to the ground. authorities ruled it was arson. it is not clear if the fires are connected. san leandro police seized more than 2000 pounds of illegal fireworks this week. officers say they were investigating two suspicious men at the store quest torch facility on tuesday. they were unloading boxes from a storage locker and loading them into a van. the boxes contain the fireworks including explosive aerial fireworks capable of shooting 125 feet into the air. police say they released the two men pending further investigation. san francisco police say a suspect in an assault at a muni

station was killed when he ran onto highway 280 this afternoon. it happened after 5 pm. new the geneva avenue exit. invest to say the suspect was running away from police when he ran onto the northbound lanes. he was struck by a car and killed. the incident forced the closure of all northbound lanes of 280 for 90 minutes. the theft of a giant hammer that was stolen in the north bay is making headlines again. this time it is because the hammer is back where it belongs. you might recall a piece of art was initially on display outside a community center. someone somehow stole it back in october. never found. the artist who created the giant handle a different opinion about it. some people thought it was great. other people it is a joke.

fog it is reduced visibility pattern. watch out for that. low visibility overnight and into tomorrow. especially near the coast. and your portions of the bay. sunlight showing you this. high clouds approaching central california the past 24 hours. the fog is winning out. and pushing back into the bay for tonight. current numbers fill 60s out toward walnut creek and concorde. san francisco 54. mountain view upper 50s. life camera looks like san jose for tonight. we have partly cloudy skies but some patchy clouds will resurface. in portions of the south bay first thing tomorrow morning. temperatures start out your friday be in the 50s. you can count on some clouds in mixture. at 3 pm and 4 pm partly sunny skies. temperatures in the 60s. the sky area of low pressure has been keeping us in temperatures not cool. it is beginning to lose his grip. temperatures begin to warm up tomorrow. and into saturday.
